Weekends in winter are often spent indoors due to a number of reasons:
*It's too cold to go outside
*It's raining too much to go anywhere
*It's warmer and cozier to stay indoors and watch movies, light a fire, read a book, crochet, play cards.
But sometimes the sun bursts out from it's hiding place and we don jackets, scarves, boots and head out for an outing. It's a good thing we did this every now and then or I am sure we would resemble hermit crabs -pasty white skin and all.
Sunday saw such an opportunity after a few days of intense cold and rain.
We went to the Helderberg Hiking Trails and did a good hour and a half hike with the kids. Nothing to intense, a slow ramble through a cold and wet forest, around a pond and then across the vineyards and up the mountain. Our walk was rather disappointingly cut short due to a huge tree that had fallen across the path. It was impossible to walk around as thick thorny bushes grew to the left and right. So we had to turn around and go back.
However this was our rather lovely view from the top of the little hill we climbed. You can see the ocean in the distance.
Beautiful vineyards and farm land
A rather old and sad looking bunch of grapes still clinging awkwardly to the vine!
Of course wintery weekends always calls for some good old-fashioned home made chicken pie

washed down with a scrumptious pear, apple and cherry pie with custard.

Yum...Winter is definitely something to enjoy!
