Paris: Day three

{a photo of the entrance to our hotel}

Remember this teeny little journal I made for my trip to Paris?
Well I thought about a comment I got about if I could fill a whole book with one day's worth of photos, this little journal was not going to be big enough! So two nights before we were due to fly...I took it apart and started over. I used a moleskin. I am so glad I did!!

I will still take photos and show you. It is bursting at the seams and I haven't even printed any photos yet! I am going to have to be selective about photos, I somehow doubt it could hold over 1000 photos!!

So Day three of our trip.
We slept soundly that night, exhausted after a long flight with very little sleep and a whole day of sightseeing and walking...

A lovely breakfast of croissants, chocolate pastries, coffee, orange juice and rolls with butter and jam. Yum. {I don't normally eat anything with wheat in but this trip I must say, It was hard not to! Parisians sure love their breads and pastries!}
note to self: get photos of breakfast off J's phone! {will post them when I have done so}

The first stop was at the local Marche up the road from us. We bought some yogurts, apples and juice to pop into the backpack hubby carried.
It was quite funny as the guy that was served before us, came back into the shop and said to the cashier {all in French obviously} that she must remember it is common courtesy to greet customers, say hello, thank you and goodbye and then he thanked her politely and walked out!
Her mouth was hanging open!!
I couldn't help but giggle!

One thing I found to be false...this theory about the French being rude. I think it is unfair to take a whole nation of people and generalize and brand them as "rude" or anything else for that matter. I am sure you do get rude people but then you get rude people everywhere!
One thing we found was that some people could mistake the way the French are sometimes abrupt or in a hurry-{especially in the restaurants} to be rudeness, but you realize they are just going about their jobs in the most precise, efficient way they can.

I love the way the French are 'people' people. They are sociable and you can see their whole way of life revolves around their genuine interest they have for each other. Take for instance the way you are greeted as soon as you enter the cafe or the Patisserie. {We got so into the habit of greeting and saying goodbye that we found it hard to stop when we got home and realized what a wonderful thing it is!} Now I find myself going the extra mile to greet people when I go about my daily errands. It makes such a difference.

Take for instance too the way they set their chairs and tables to all face the streets. So they can watch the crowds walking by while still holding a conversation with the person they are dining with. Strange for us to see, but so interesting how cultures differ!

The sheer amount of restaurants and cafe's tells you that they love to get together and socialize and I loved that about the City. There is always something going on!

Back to our day...
We went to the Hard Rock Cafe to get our 4-day Paris Pass cards. If you ever go to Paris for any amount of time longer than 3 days, do yourself a favor and get the Paris pass. It is wonderful! I haven't worked out if you really do save money, but you definitely just save a whole lot of time and frustration and waiting. We had free entry into all the museums, and a lot of the monuments like the Arc De Triomphe, an hour free ride on the Bateaux {boat} on the river. {unfortunately we just didn't get around to using it!}. All in all over 60 attractions, free use of the metro, RER, trams and bus's within zone 1-3 and a two day hop-on-hop-off bus tour of Paris and some other specials too.

So we started the hop-on-hop-off tour and got off and walked around when we wanted to.
I LOVE this photo! It reminds me of one of those Posters. I took this while we were on the bus tour, passing a chef school I suppose... {another example of their friendliness!}

We went to the Arc De Triomphe and went up it and looked out over Paris.

From there we went to Parc Monceau. We walked around, enjoying the warm weather and beautiful spring scenes.

We made our way to the Eiffel Tower. Took photos in the parks there nearby.

Had a cup of coffee on the bridge and watched the boats...

Asked a gentlemen to take a photo of us...he clearly thought the Eiffel Tower was more important than two silly tourists!

Dinner from there at 9pm and then back to the hotel.

Paris: Day one & two

Day one Of Paris Trip:

22 March 2011

The day got off to an early start with my husbands parents taking us to the airport. Our children skipped school for the day to come and say goodbye to us at the airport. With a big lump in my throat, I squeezed and kissed them goodbye and willed myself not to cry...

So we sat and waited to board our plane...

23 March 2011
20 hours later we were in Paris, France.... on the other side of the world...
The first thing we did upon entering the terminal was get two tickets to Paris by train.
And then got on the train. The journey well under way...
So here we sat on the train, tired, cold but terribly excited.
This was about 9am.
We sat watching the views flash past us...

green banks scattered with little white daisy-like flowers.
smoke billowing out chimneys.
people off to work.
people waiting at the stations, hands in their jacket pockets or reading the paper,
drinking a cup of coffee.
trees laden with heavy white or pink blossoms {clearly Spring in Paris!}

We made it to Gare Du Nord Station and with our bags stumbled out into the street of a bright, Parisian sunshine morning. I think we both stood a few minutes just taking it all in. I felt the same awe I felt two years before when I had stood on that same street, looking around me, hardly daring to believe I was in Paris!

We began our walk with bags in tow, down Rue La Fayette. Soon we reached out Hotel.
Villa-Fenalon.

We stayed there for 4 nights. The Hotel is quite sweet. Full of charm and character and has a lovely atmosphere. I liked the lobby and decorations and it had a cozy little breakfast area. The breakfast was good. Croissants, Chocolate pastries, rolls with butter and jams. A good sized cup of coffee and fresh orange juice. (included in our room rate). We were on the first floor. Our room was not brilliant but it was comfortable. I didn't like the floor to ceiling mirrored walls in the bathroom! {I mean, who wants to see themselves on the toilet from every angle!!?? ha ha} And the bathroom could of done with a bit more effort in decoration and fixtures, like covering the exposed plumbing pipes and putting a better bin in besides the orange plastic one they had! Other than that, it was decent and we had clean towels everyday. It is not like we spent any time besides a quick bath and a good nights rest there anyway. I would recommend it as it had a lot of charm, quirkiness, character and the location is excellent.

We arrived quite early, I reckon around 9:30 or 9:45 and left our bags in their luggage hold.
And then we walked to Montmarte.

Don't you just love this light???I am in love with the carousels of Paris.
I stood and watched a man feeding some pigeons, a mother laughing as her daughter passed on her on the carousel, a lady reading the morning paper...

Lot's more walking around...

a lovely little park up in Montmarte Square Buisson I think it was. (behind the Sacre Coeur).
You won't find many shots of the typical buildings and monuments of Paris amongst my photos...sure I took them, but I concentrated my efforts and gazes more at the REAL Paris, the people going about their daily lives, the beauty hidden in every crack and down every alley way.
We looked past the graffiti and saw a city brimming with life and beauty.

Mothers with children and babies enjoying the early morning. Made me miss my peeps...
Spring blossoms...
More spring blossoms.
early morning dew.

It's no wonder people were inspired to write songs and elope to Paris and get married there!! There truly is no place as romantic as Paris. There is just something about it...It gets into your bones.

Eating yummy fruit tarts...

life creeping out of every crevice...

The only vineyard still left in the city of Paris.
Us...
Louvre..I won't bore you with typical tourist photos of the Louvre buildings, pyramids, water fountains etc...I wanted to show you the Paris I saw...the Paris I breathed in and the Paris that spoke volumes to me...

Jarin Des Tuileries

A common mode of transport...

towards the end of the day...enjoying the most beautiful time of day..dusk...
Watching the little boats...

And that concludes our first day in Paris.
I will be back tomorrow with day 3.

In the meantime enjoy a video I made of little clips taken throughout our stay there.

{For best results, pause the video and let it load to the end and then click play, then you can watch it without breaks or waiting for it to load}

Learned a lot more French while there.
Discovered, explored, and walked....oh boy, did we walk...
Took the metro, RER, tram and bus too.
Went up the Arc Du Triomphe.
Saw just about every park in Paris.
Ate delicious food.
Hubby rented a car and we drove up the Champs Elysees!!
Had wine every night (which I never do back home!)
Had three lovely days of sun.
The rest of the time it rained.
Got caught in the rain up by Montmarte.
Got soaked to the bone.
Smelled the heavenly scent of new spring blossoms.
Kissed under the Eiffel Tower...

I could go on but more on that later in the week...

Thank you for all that entered my little giveaway.

I faithfully went through the enterants and made a note of those of you who entered by commenting, blogging about it, tweeting about it and posting the banner on your blogs. A entry was awarded for each of these.

I wrote them out rather messily onto scraps of paper...

Threw them all into my bed and tossed them around...

closed my eyes and chose one...

wait for it....

And the WINNER is....
