Custom orders: Crocheted Photo Frames

Recently I did a custom order for a client who requested 10 little crocheted frames. They are for her wedding. She is going to print out her table numbers and slip them into the frames and there will be one on each table. What a sweet idea! She wanted to be able to use them as photo frames afterwards and hang them on her wall. So I made them to be self-standing and afterwards she can simply take off the stand at the back and use a piece of the same yarn (which I included in her order) and hang them up. My crocheted frames have a perspex layer to slip your photo behind. It does the job of glass but is lighter, cheaper and not breakable!

I love to do custom orders, so please contact me if you would like any of these made.

Still enjoying our fireplace, as Spring is still a far-off mirage in the distance. August, believe it or not, the month before Spring, is our coldest month of Winter every year! We always get snow on the mountains, a massive cold spell with rain, wind, freezing temperatures and sometimes even hail.

And lastly I updated my guest bathroom with new blinds I made. My bathroom has a nautical theme, but the previous blinds I made have been hanging for over 10 years and it was time for a change.
Thanks for looking and for stopping by!

A bit of Normal and a bit of Gluten-free.

Hello all!
I can't believe it is Friday once again! The weeks just seem to whiz by lately!

Today I thought to share some information on being wheat and gluten intolerant. So if you think you may be one or both, please read the whole post. If you are not interested in that bit, just read the part that says "the normal bit" and skip the "the gluten bit".

The Normal bit
Enjoyed some baking with the kids. They wanted to make monster cupcakes. So I used little zip lock bags for the different colored icing. First I snipped about half a centimeter off one of the corners and  then pushed a piping bag nozzle into the corner tightly and then scooped the icing into them, zipped it close, and it was ready to use! I don't recommend filling it too much (you can see the yellow bag in the photo was filled too much and when I squeezed it, the nozzle shot off at lightning speed and I ended up with icing all over the place!) The bag in the front is filled to the right amount. Use your thumb to gently squeeze the icing into the nozzle while twisting the bag round and round to avoid it bursting out the zip lock!

Or just use a normal piping bag! ha ha. I didn't have one (was ripped) so I came up with this idea.
By the way another cool idea I saw on TV was to roll your icing in a piece of plastic to form like a sausage, twist both ends of the plastic. Snip one end and then put that into your normal piping bag-then you can just throw away the used plastic afterwards and your normal piping bag stays nice and clean.

I also attempted to make a little house...was just playing around..

And my son's are there too...

The Gluten bit
More baking this week...
My first gluten-free bread.
I am wheat and gluten intolerant. I don't eat bread, rolls, pizza and while I can handle the occoasional muffin, cup cake, piece of cake and pasta, I try and avoid it all together. I also cannot eat any wheat based cereal or anything with oats as oats contain gluten. I am used to it as I have been this way ever since I was a child. Although as a child we didn't know I was suffering with an intolerance, it was only later on, after I had my first child and in desperation to shed all the extra weight I had picked up with my pregnancy, I cut out wheat altogether.  Well not only did the weight just drop off, but I felt the most healthy and energetic I had ever felt. No more lathargy, listlissness, no more headaches and constipation and bloating.

I realized there must be a connection.

Going back further than my first child, I had started to eat differently as well, trying to stay off bread as I realized it did not agree with me.
So began a whole new way of eating for me. It has been about 15 years now of cutting out bread and 12 years of not eating wheat. The gluten part I only realized about 3 years ago, when for two weeks I ate cooked oats every morning only to suffer for about 3 weeks afterwards! I realized it must be the gluten in the oats as it was the only thing at the time I was eating differently.

I can eat small amounts, like a muffin or a piece of cake, but not on a daily basis. Pasta is fine too if I only eat it once a week, although I try and use gluten free pasta (maize pasta). I stay clear of all bread and rolls though as they are the worst for me and cereals and muesli with oats in.

I am so used to it now, it doesn't bother me anymore nor is it something I even think about. I eat a lot of yogurt and fruit, I stick to maize based products like maize cracker bread, rice based products too and of course I can eat any fruit, veggies and meat.

I am not a fan of rye products at all. I don't enjoy the taste nor the texture. (and rye contains gluten!)
I cannot tell you how many wheat-free or gluten-free breads I have tried over the years, and have never enjoyed any of them. They never had the right texture or taste. Always heavy, stodgy, doughy and left me feeling heavy. Bread is a wonderful thing-soft, light and fluffy...(the stuff of my dreams!)

I made this gluten free bread and was very pleasantly surprised. It was easy to make (like a cake mixture) no kneading involved, just mix and pour into a loaf tin and cook for 45 min.

It is dark, but so light! Slightly crumbly, but altogether a pleasant texture and taste. I found it didn't toast well but I enjoyed it with peanut butter and even later on some ham.

If you suffer from any or a combination of the following I urge you to simply start cutting out wheat/gluten based products from your diet and see how you feel:  abdominal bloating, excessive flatulence, constipation, depression, a general loss of well-being, fatigue, breathlessness, weight loss or weight gain, anemia, excessive flatulence.

Most people who are wheat or gluten intolerant do not even realize they are or that there is something you can do about it without it being a costly and life-changing thing. These days there are so many gluten-free substitutes that you can still eat as normally as possible. Sometimes along with being gluten intolerant comes being wheat intolerant. Normally they go together, as in my case. Fortunately an intolerance is much better than an allergy and can be controlled simply by watching what you eat.

I can still eat crisps, pasta and the odd croissant for example but let me do that two days in a row or even every day for a week and I pay the price for weeks to come! If you notice that after eating anything with wheat or gluten in, that within 15 minutes you are bloated, feeling tired, sluggish, get a headache, you are probably intolerant.

If you would like any more information or tips and advice on what to eat/substitutes, feel free to email me.

Have a great weekend!

DIY: LPS Blythe Doll furniture and accessories

I am like a little kid in a sweet shop!
I am so excited as I designed and had the wood cut to make my daughter her first full-scale dolls house. I have wanted to for so long, I don't know why it has taken me so long to get there! (sorry baby, at least you will have it soon!).

As a little girl I always wanted a dolls house. It was my number one obsession. I remember lying under the lounge table with all my paraphernalia of assorted homemade (very badly diy stuff) furniture, dolls and being lost in my own little world for hours.

I never got to have my own dolls house, but instead grew up to own a life-size one complete with real working appliances! ha ha!

So this little project is a double joy. Something I can relive a bit of my childhood with and something I know she really wants. (what little girl doesn't?) We are going to build it this weekend with the help of hubby and it will hopefully be an on-going project to paint, decorate, and make things for it for a while to come still.

In the meantime, I made all her bedroom stuff today. It was super fun, in fact, so much fun that I left the housework, ignored the piles of laundry and unmade beds...

Here is her little doll in her make-shift "room" for now, I wanted to set it up for her as a surprise.

I made the bed (mostly thick cardboard). I made a headboard for it too.
Then I made the cushions and pillows, a mattress, quilt, sheet and crocheted blanket.

I love the little blanket.

Her little pillows, quilt and sheet are a mix of vintage and new fabrics

Here is the bed. top left: the base. I covered the cardboard with pretty card stock paper, and the base with a sweet little crocheted trim that came off my favorite pair of jeans of hers that she outgrew many years ago and I have hung onto like the sentimental silly I am.
top right: the mattress (just some batting covered with calico fabric)
bottom left: sheet made from vintage material
bottom right: the little quilt I made.

The dressing table wasn't as great as I wanted, later on I will redo it. I used foil for the mirror!
washi tape to hide the cardboard and a little ruffled skirt.

I made a tiny little book and little bedside cloth....

I couldn't think of what to use for a lamp and suddenly it came to me! Of course, a sweet little wooden spool! It was a hurried one as she was due to be fetched from school and time was ticking away....
But I think I will add some trim to it and try and make another or a few...

The rug...hexagons and I crocheted a trim for it.

and so the sweet little dolly can sleep peacefully in her nice new, warm bed tonight....

For some amazing talent, beautiful hand made dolls furniture (from wood, not cardboard!) have a look at lovejoy Bears blog. I only found her blog today, I fell in love with her sweet creations and amazing talent!
And lati dolls??? I didn't know until today they exist. They are the most beautiful dolls I have ever seen! But so expensive!! I want them all. My daughter and I were drooling....

Does anyone have one?
Have a great weekend everybody!

Farm Weekend

This past weekend we went to stay on a friend's farm about 2 hours drive from here.
We got up before the crack of dawn to load the car, wake up sleepy children and left before the sun was even up!
It was quite misty on the way...

see the tree tops sticking above the mist below?

Along the way we were greeted with the most beautiful scenery of snow on the mountain peeks and vibrant fields of canola oil plants. It was so pretty. I snapped happily away and every now and then got hubby to stop so I could take photo's. In our family, it's a common occurrence -me stopping to take photo's and phrases like "oh it's so pretty". "just look at that!", " I must get a photo", "oh wow" are frequently heard by everyone else!
(below photo: excuse the window glare!)

 beautiful canola oil fields

The weather was cold but we had warm, sunny days while we were there.

My hubby helped his friend build this permanent guest tent. I was so impressed when I saw it, as I didn't go through the weekend they built it, so it was my first time to see it completed. And his first time, as he helped to build the deck, the frame structure, put the canvas tent on, but didn't get to it as it is now.

It was amazingly cozy and lovely inside, with lovely wooden floors, a little kitchen unit and a lovely bathroom.
I recognized these photo's. I took these on my last visit.

For a man to set this up -quite impressive!
Such a lovely wood-clad bathroom with skylights and plenty of natural light coming in from the glass shower.

It was lovely to shower, and look at that view and river, knowing there is not a soul in sight for miles around!

In the mornings we enjoyed a cup of coffee sitting on this deck, listening to the birds and fish eagles. The kids played and had some hot chocolate before we got dressed and took a walk to the main house where our friends stayed.

Love these cushions.

A very cute homemade lamp!
We hadn't been there long when this happened...our Friend got his car stuck in a ditch and they spend ages trying to get it out...tsk....tsk...men! Ahem..notice the car too! LANDROVER...need I say more? (sorry to any landy fans out there!)

The next day something similar happened....let's just say 4 vehicles ended up getting stuck in the mud....

We had decided to take the kids and go for a nice little scenic drive. Us girls and kids in the rhino cart, each guy on a quad bike. Quad bike gets stuck, our rhino got stuck...So the kids and I and my friend are standing in mud, dodge-looking plants covered in spiders, eagles and vultures circling ominously above our heads...

The men went off to fetch the land cruiser to tow out the two stuck vehicles...well that got stuck...
So back to the farm to fetch a tractor....sigh...they got stuck too....

At this point, we were fed up and walked back, leaving them to their own devices.
By the end of the weekend I can say that all vehicles except the tractor were recovered! haha. It will have to stay there until they return another weekend and hopefully the ground has dried out enough!

Here you can see my jeans covered in mud!
The flowers there this time of year are amazing. Seeing these made me realize Spring is just around the corner, although it certainly doesn't feel like it!

My daughter asked me to pick her a little posy for her dolls...

Love the textures, the hardness of the rock, the flowing flowers as they trail down the rock and the crisp, brittle branches in the background.

Had to do a SP amongst the flowers on one of my many walks. I often walk alone when I am out here as I just love the solitude and I can stop to take as many photo's of the same flower as I like without having to hear that I already took a photo of that.

Lot's of walks, eating, bird-spotting, and happy little moments later we were on our way home and had more lovely views on the way home...

Wow..fields of tiny pink flowers against a backdrop of yellow....amazing.

And that concludes our little weekend escape...
